Topic: Weather Systems and weather forecasting

Learning Objectives: 1. Students will be able to identify and describe the five main weather systems

Procedure:

Introduction

  1. Students will actively engage in a crossword puzzle of weather and climate based on previous knowlede for 10 mins.
  2. Display the term weather systems on the smart board in a powerpoint presentation and ask the students to say what they understand by the term.
  3. Display the definition of the term for the students to make a note of it. : Doldrums, cold fronts, Hurricanes/cyclones, anticyclones, northers.

Student Activity

  1. Students will draw representations of the weather systems from representations given on the smart board.
  2. Students will take notes on the different weather systems
  3. students will do an excel exercise to find the Temperature in degrees fahrenheit, the atmospheic pressure in millibars, the wind direction and Cloud cover in Oktas.
  4. Students will work in groups to complete the spreadsheet.
  5. Groups will be given specfic locations to find the remaining information. on the teacher prepared spreadsheet.
  6. Students will find the  information from a link provided by teacher.
  7. Groups will share the information that they received so that they can calculate the averages.

National weather service. students will follow the link to get their information.

Excel Spreadsheet

Presentation:

Students will present their findings of the research along with their calculations on the completed spreadsheet. It will be left for the teacher to evaluate on the computers.

Students will show their representations of the weather systems before they leave the class

Assessment: Teacher will evaluate the work done by the groups in the spreadsheet. Teacher will identify words in the word puzzle with class at the end of lesson.

    I like the way you put out your information in regards to earth science. Not a lot of studenst are actually interested in science, on less they are planning to become scientist or doctors etc. Great job.
